Filipa Lowndes Vicente

Historian, Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon, she received her PhD from the University of London in 2000. In 2015 she was a visiting professor at King's College, University of London and, in 2016, at Brown University, Providence, USA. She is the author of several articles and books: Travels and Exhibitions: Pedro V in 19th Century Europe (2003); Other Orientalisms: India between Florence and Bombay, 1860 1900, published in Portugal (2009) in India and Italy (2012); Art Without History: Women and Artistic Culture, 16th-20th Centuries (2012); Between Two Empires. British travelers in Goa (1800-1940) (2015). As an editor she has published: O Império da Visão: fotografia no contexto colonial português (1860-1960), in 2014; in 2016, Aurélia de Sousa, Mulher Artista (1866-1922), an exhibition catalog that she also curated; and, in 2023, together with Afonso Dias Ramos, Photography in Portuguese Colonial Africa, 1860-1975.

She is co-curator, with Inocência Mata, of the exhibition Álbuns de Familia. Photographs of the African Diaspora in Greater Lisbon (1975-today), at Padrão dos Descobrimentos (April 28-Nov 30, 2024).
