German Professor, Prof. Dr. rer. medic. Stephanie Stiel, participates in a session on “Ethical challenges in research with vulnerable participants and persons unable to consent” at CADOS – Católica Doctoral School International Course on “Ethics and Integrity in Science”

As part of CADOS – Católica Doctoral School International Course on “Ethics and Integrity in Science”, the International Guest Speaker, Prof. Dr. rer. medic. Stephanie Stiel, coordinator of the palliative care research group at Medizinische Hochschule Hannover (MHH), Germany, participated in the session about “Ethical challenges in research with vulnerable participants and persons unable to consent”. Based on her vivid, extraordinary, and lived experience as a researcher, Prof. Stiel shared a core set of challenges that she has faced in practice when conducting research with vulnerable participants.

As part of this interactive and intimist session, Dr. Sandra Martins Pereira and Prof. Dr. Pablo Hernández-Marrero (CEGE and Instituto de Bioética) explored the ethical, conceptual, and theoretical aspects of vulnerability and capacity to consent (e.g., persons at the end of life, persons with dementia, persons with severe persistent mental illness) related to each case presented by Prof. Dr. Stephanie Stiel. Researchers’ vulnerability and strategies on how to cope with difficult situations in real-world research practice were also explored and triggered rich discussions among participants.

This is the first edition of the CADOS International Course on “Ethics and Integrity in Science”, which is designed to enclose a wide spectrum of disciplines, both among the national and international professors and doctorate students.
