Excellence in Scientific Research
«High ethics standards also add to the quality of research and increase its likely social impact.» Jean-Michel Baer, Director for Science, Economy, and Society.
Ethical conduct in scientific research implies the application of values, fundamental ethical principles, norms, and guidelines for good clinical practice in research, as well as current legislation, in all fields applicable to research, as everyone can pose ethical questions.
All research projects must be constructed and described in a clear, objective, and practicable way. The rights, interests, safety, and well-being of research subjects must be promoted and preserved. Research projects must produce results that are reliable [ICH-E6 Good Clinical Practice (GCP), April 19, 2021].
The results of research projects are fundamental to support evidence-based decisions, therefore, projects designed in an inappropriate way can risk the safety of research subjects, as well as inappropriately influence decisions. Developing research requires responsibility for the process, for the results, for those involved, but also for the available resources.
Ethics are an integral part of the scientific research process, from conception to conclusions, and ethical compliance - of any project and research process - is considered essential to promote true excellence in research.
The Ethical Appraisal Procedure focuses on compliance with ethical norms and standards, applicable legislation, national and international conventions and declarations, national authorizations, and ethical approvals, proportionality of methods and awareness of proponents with regard to compliance with high ethical standards, as well as the imperative to protect and guarantee the dignity and integrity of all involved ones, in the different stages of the research process. Scientists and researchers must always adhere to a firm code of conduct and a set of procedures based on good research practices.
This program intends to:
Present research ethics and integrity as the way to promote research aims, to improve the impact and quality of knowledge, and protect the rights of research participants.
Teach about the principles, values, virtues, norms, and guidelines of research ethics & integrity.
Promote scientific and academic integrity and enhance research validity.
Empower participants in the ethical procedures of scientific research.
Train participants in the use of self-assessment ethics tools.
